After steamrolling their respective opponents in the Final Four, the flagship squads of the two biggest basketball empires in the PBA — San Miguel Beermen and TNT Tropang 5G — are set to collide in what could be a defining Finals series in the league’s 49th season.

It’s not just another championship battle. This is a clash of dynasties, a battle of philosophies, and perhaps, a passing of the torch — or a firm statement that the old guards are still very much in control.

San Miguel, the league’s most decorated franchise with 29 titles, is back in familiar territory. Led by head coach Leo Austria, the Beermen survived a grueling seven-game series against their sister team Barangay Ginebra, thanks in large part to a vintage Game 7 performance from playoff warrior Chris Ross.

TNT, meanwhile, continues its push for history — gunning for a grand slam under head coach Chot Reyes. The Tropang 5G handled business in six games against Rain or Shine, maintaining control despite an injury-hit lineup that’s running on depth, system, and sheer grit.

Coaching Chess Match

Austria has captured 9 titles with the Beermen, six of which came from the Philippine Cup alone. He only had one Finals loss. Now, he’s chasing his 10th title and San Miguel’s 30th overall — a number that cements dynasty status.

Reyes isn’t far behind. He holds 11 championships and a record six “Coach of the Year” awards. He’s also a national icon, having brought Gilas Pilipinas back to the FIBA World Cup in 2014 after a 36-year absence.

These two aren’t just tacticians — they’re legacy-builders. Both made immediate impacts in their rookie coaching seasons: Reyes won his first title with Purefoods, while Austria made history as the league’s first-ever Rookie of the Year back in his playing days.

Star Power Breakdown

As expected, June Mar Fajardo will be at the center of it all. The eight-time MVP remains a dominant presence inside, and another strong run could solidify his chances for a ninth plum. He’s flanked by CJ Perez, Marcio Lassiter, Juami Tiongson, and of course, the ageless Ross.

Role players like Rodney Brondial, Mo Tautuaa, Jericho Cruz, Don Trollano, and Jeron Teng bring hustle, versatility, and grit to Austria’s rotation. JM Calma may also step up if Andreas Cahilig remains out due to injury.

TNT’s depth is impressive even without their top guns. Jayson Castro and Rey Nambatac remain sidelined, but Calvin Oftana, RR Pogoy, and Kelly Williams have carried the load — despite sustaining their own injuries during the semifinals.

Poy Erram is quietly doing the dirty work down low, while Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser has been physical and impactful. Jordan Heading, despite battling back spasms, helped drag the team to the Finals. If he’s healthy in the series, he’s a potential x-factor.

They’ve also got steady contributors off the bench: Simon Enciso, Glenn Khobuntin, Almond Vosotros, Brian Heruela, Kim Aurin, Henry Galinato, and Paul Varilla — players who know their roles and stay ready when their number is called.

What’s at Stake

On paper, San Miguel appears deeper and more cohesive. They’ve been here many times before and know how to close. But TNT’s mission is different — they’re chasing history, trying to become the first team outside of the SMC umbrella to sweep all three conferences in a season.

And we know this: TNT won’t go down quietly.

This best-of-seven series begins Sunday, July 13, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. It has all the makings of a classic — full of rivalries, redemption arcs, and history in the making.

Will San Miguel add another jewel to their crown? Or will TNT rewrite PBA history with a grand slam finish?

One thing’s certain: this is a Finals worth every dribble.
