Meralco dominates league-leading NorthPort, improves to 6-3 slate
Meralco made a statement after beating the league-leading NorthPort Batang Pier, 111-94, in the continuation of the PBA Season 49 Commissioner’s Cup on Tuesday night, January 14, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Akil Mitchell and Chris Banchero led the way for the Bolts as they got their sixth win in nine games to improve their conference record.
Mitchell tallied 30 points and 13 rebounds to power Meralco to victory, while Banchero had 25 markers, four boards, and one steal to pace the local unit.
“It was a very important game for us. I was really excited to play NorthPort tonight because They were playing the best in this conference, so we really wanted to see where we were as a team and I thought we responded well tonight,” said Banchero.
Bolts head coach Luigi Trillo acknowledged the better defense that their team showed.
“We played better defense as a team. We know this team can score the ball. They got guys like (Joshua) Munzon, (Arvin) Tolentino, (William) Navarro, their import also a perfect fit for them. Their import is also a perfect fit for them. I thought our bench, all around, coming out... even our bigs, Norbert (Torres), Kyle (Pascual), Raymond (Almazan) helping Brandon (Bates). Quality from them coming in," said Trillo.
On the other hand, Kadeem Jack led the Batang Pier with 29 points, while Arvin Tolentino added 19 markers. Joshua Munzon and William Navarro also scored in double digits with 12 and 11, respectively.
